Japan is set to further its security partnership with India by considering the export of cutting-edge naval communications antennas. The potential sale of the NORA-50 ‘UNICORN’ antenna would mark just the second export of Japanese defense equipment since restrictions were eased in 2014, demonstrating a significant shift in the country’s defence industry.
This move strengthens ties within the Indo-Pacific region and expands Japan-India security relations beyond joint military exercises. Sources suggest a key motivation lies in “strengthening deterrence” and helping India curb its historic reliance on Russian military supplies, reports Nikkei.
Developed by a consortium of Japanese firms, the UNICORN stealth antenna system offers enhanced detection capabilities. The deal, potentially confirmed at the upcoming Quad summit, would be a landmark event. While Japan has strict controls on the export of lethal weaponry, the antennas are classified as a “communication tool”, enabling the deal to progress.
India, long reliant on Russia for arms imports, faces increasing international pressure following its stance on the Ukraine conflict. The antenna deal highlights India’s attempts to diversify its suppliers and boost its domestic manufacturing capacity, offering a chance for Japan to become a key player in India’s defense market.
