EU plans sanctions on Chinese electronics companies ‘aiding Russia’s war machine’ – FT

Ukraine Conflict

According to the FT, Brussels has proposed sanctions on Chinese electronics companies for supporting Russia’s war machine for the first time since the war in Ukraine began.

The FT reports that among the seven Chinese businesses accused of selling equipment that could be used in weapons are two mainland Chinese electronics companies, 3HC Semiconductors and King-Pai Technology, and two companies based in Hong Kong – Sinno Electronics and Sigma Technology. The FT says that all four are already on US sanctions lists

“In view of the key enabling role of electronic components for use by Russia’s military and industrial complex for supporting the war of aggression against Ukraine, it is also appropriate to include certain other entities in third countries involved in the circumvention of trade restrictions as well as certain Russian entities involved in the development, production and supply of electronic components for Russia’s military and industrial complex,” the sanctions proposal from the European Commission said.

The EU is attempting to address the evasion of sanctions more broadly. The proposed legislation includes provisions that would permit the EU to block the sale of specific goods to third countries if diplomatic pressure fails to modify their actions. Member states must give the green light to individual actions taken against firms or countries.
