‘Explosive demand’ for memory chips may create shortage, says Micron

Explosive demands on data centres combined with heightened demand for notebooks threatens to create a shortage in memory chips, reports SemiMedia here.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra referred to the correlation between China’s lockdown of cities in January/February and the corresponding spike in gaming, e-commerce, and telecommuting that led to an explosive growth in data centre usage.

“Micron is moving from supplying smartphones to serving the data centre market,” Sanjay Mehrotra said. “At the same time, the current explosive demand may lead to a shortage of memory chips.”SemiMedia reports that more people working from home will stimulate market demand for notebooks, placing additional pressures on chip supply.
