‘Pioneer, optimise, scale’ – Gartner reveals 2023 supply chain tech trends

According to Gartner, the 2023 top supply chain technology trends are a wide variety of emerging technologies and strategies that will shape the future of supply chain in the year ahead.

As organizations place greater emphasis on supply chain management, Chief Supply Chain Officers (CSCOs) intend to grasp their collective opportunity to invest in growth through new technology investments, according to Gartner, Inc.

“The last three years of uncertainty have blurred the line between business and technology strategies to the point that they must be considered together,” said Simon Jacobson, VP Analyst in Gartner’s Supply Chain Practice. “Supply chain leaders must have an understanding of the strategic, disruptive and unavoidable technologies that will impact their planning processes over the next five years.”

Jacobson noted that three key motivations among supply chain leaders help to categorize this year’s technology trends: to pioneer new forms of engagement, optimize for resilience, and scale performance that enables technology to be delivered “any place and any time”

Actionable AI, smart operations, mobile asset optimization, industry cloud platforms, employee engagement, composable application architecture, cyber resilient supply chains, and supply chain integration services are just some of the technologies and strategies that will make up the supply chain of the future.

  • Actionable AI is the technology that mimics the problem solving capabilities of humans, making data-driven decisions and learning from past experiences.
  • Smart operations is an idea that applies to all core operations, including manufacturing, service and logistics.
  • Mobile asset optimization maximizes the use of an enterprise’s mobile assets by combining different software and sensory technologies.
  • Industry cloud platforms combine SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS with specific functionality for vertical industry use cases.
  • Employee engagement is a set of tools and applications used to improve frontline worker performance, satisfaction and retention.
  • Composable application architecture is a set of packaged business capabilities that represent a well-defined business capability.
  • Cyber resilient supply chains are a set of tools, processes and governance methods needed to mitigate cybersecurity risks.
  • Supply chain integration services is the strategy of integrating different applications to make a more interconnected world.

These trends will lead to a future of supply chain that is more efficient, more secure, and more connected. Companies will have to carefully consider these trends in order to remain competitive in the future, and to ensure that they have the right tools and strategies in place to make the most of their supply chain.
