Japan’s Rapidus to build nation’s most advanced chip plant

Hokkaido Japan

Japan’s state-backed chipmaker, Rapidus, will build a new $37bn cutting-edge chip plant at Hokkaido to manufacture advanced 2-nm wafers.

The factory will be a chip-production hub in Japan, as the country aims to rejuvenate its semiconductor sector through government initiatives.

The chipmaker plans to build the plant in Chitose, about 36 kilometers southeast of Sapporo, the capital city of Hokkaido prefecture.

Advanced chips to be made at the plant could be used in 5G communications, quantum computing, data centers, self-driving vehicles, and digital smart cities.

According to Japan Times, the Japanese government will provide subsidies of ¥70 billion as part of efforts to revive the country’s semiconductor industry, which has lost its competitive edge to producers in Taiwan and South Korea over the years.
