Murata had to shut their Japanese factory earlier this month due to a confirmed case of novel coronavirus, further affecting their MLCC supply capacity.
In a post on their website, they said that one of their employees in the Fukui Prefecture has recently tested positive for COVID-19 and that “in consideration of the health and safety of all the employees on site, we will suspend operations from the 5th to 7th April, requesting all employees to remain at home”.
Murata continued, “We are treating this as a global issue and will further enhance our communication with our local teams from other plants and offices to ensure the well-being and safety of our employees and local communities.”
It is believed this factory accounts for 25% of Murata’s overall MLCC production, with another 15% in the Philippines and the rest in mainland China.
The passive components industry estimates that the shutdown of the Philippine factory affected 40% of Murata’s Philippine output. Now its factories in Japan are also affected, which will make the global MLCC supply prospects more unstable.
