Chip shortage continues to plague auto makers

Volkswagen says the chip shortage is going to go well into 2022, and Bosch China says they can only meet half of the car chips demanded.

CEO of Volkswagen Group America, Scott Keogh, said at a recent automotive summit that the chip shortage will continue at least until the second half of 2022, according to Reuters, as he hinted at the prospect of having to redesign cars.

“Historically, we’ve made decision as if chips were nearly infinite, so each and every module required a chip, every window lift, every modulator,” he said. “There’s ways that we start to look at it when we develop the cars, can we do more modules with less chips? It can be done. These are all things we are looking at.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Chen Yudong, President of Bosch China, said that at present, Bosch China can only meet half of the semiconductor needs of auto companies.

“The car companies that did not complete their production tasks last month were mostly because of us,” said Chen Yudong. “We are also impacted by suppliers.”

As a pivotal Tier 1 supplier, Bosch China purchases semiconductors from companies such as STMicroelectronics and Infineon, and ships them to vehicle companies after integration.
