Ventilator supply chain risk – What are we doing about it?

Counterfeit Material exists across all commodities but is a profound risk to life-critical applications such as those found in medical, aerospace and defence industries.

The consequences of using counterfeit material can vary from minor to life threatening; for example, what are the consequences if the IC fails to switch in an automatic defibrillator?

Counterfeit and fraudulent parts become more prevalent when there is volatility within the market – economic and political turmoil or natural disasters such as the current COVID-19 challenge, impact the supply by way of shortages and allocation- which fosters opportunity for counterfeiters when stock cannot be obtained from the usual, trusted sources.

Astute Counterfeit Avoidance Program

Our operations are run in accordance with quality processes that are certified to AS6081 that mitigates the risks of purchasing and supplying fraudulent/counterfeit electronic parts.

For parts obtained through non-traceable routes, Astute will subject products to rigorous destructive and non-destructive testing through our counterfeit avoidance program, market leading in its process that goes above and beyond the aerospace and defence quality standards on which it is based.

Our component inspection and laboratory team are still in action, at 75% on a split shift basis to ensure their safety and to preserve the function of these departments, who are doing an amazing job in this critical time.

You can see our inspection process from start to finish (visual inspection of packaging, to diode microscopy) here:
