Industry responds to U.S. call for supply chain data

Samsung Electronics and Renesas Electronics were among the Asian chipmakers to respond to a U.S. request for supply chain data by Monday while withholding detailed client information, reports Nikkei

Japan’s Renesas Electronics and Kioxia Holdings said they complied with the U.S. government’s call to voluntarily provide data, intended to help identify vulnerabilities in the global supply chain. But both companies added that they left out detailed customer data from their disclosures.

Previously, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest contract chipmaker, turned in supply-chain data but excluded confidential client information.

U.S. Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo, commented, “Over the past couple weeks, I have spoken to the CEOs of a number of semiconductor companies, including TSMC, and asked them for their compliance.”

The White House began prodding major auto manufacturers and chip vendors earlier this year to share information about the global chip shortage in a bid to bring more transparency to a supply chain that has been strained for more than a year. Raimondo met with auto giants (GM, Ford, and Stellantis), technology firms (Apple and Microsoft), chip makers (Intel and Micron), and foundries (Globalfoundries, TSMC, and Samsung) to discuss the chip shortages which have plagued the industry for more than 18 months.
