DRAM prices rising after strong PC demand

The contract price of DRAM has risen 5% year-on-year, the first price rise since May 2020, says Business Korea.

Prices have been bolstered by rising PC sales which reached 282mn units in 2020 (+10% y-y), the highest in 10 years, says NH Investment & Securities. Online education and working from home is fuelling the global demand.

“Notebook PC ODMs and brand companies predict that strong PC sales will continue in 1H21. Overall, 2021 PC sales are to expand 5% y-y. All in all, strong PC sales bode well for the memory industry,” comments the NH analyst.

They report that the entry of new players such as AMD and ARM into the Intel-dominated PC market has contributed to PC sales growth.
